1. Have you received a $158 Notice of Violation?
Within 30 days after you allegedly run a red light at a “photo enforced” intersection, you will receive a “Notice of Violation” in the mail. This notice is not a traffic ticket, so paying it will not affect your insurance nor result in points on your driving record.
As such, you should consider the following when deciding to fight it:
If the video/photos show your car crossing the intersection or making a left turn on red, you should pay the $158 fine.
But if you were making a right turn on red, you should consider fighting it, as the chances of winning in court are high.
To contest a Notice of Violation you disregard the due date on the notice and wait for the “Uniform Traffic Citation” (see next section).
2. Have you received a $277 red light camera ticket?
If you don’t pay the Notice of Violation by the due date, you will receive a $277 red light camera ticket (known as a “Florida Uniform Traffic Citation”) via certified mail within 60 days.
Upon receipt of a red light camera ticket, you have 30 days to answer it. At this point, there is no going back. You can no longer pay the first Notice of Violation and we advise you not pay the fine, as doing so will result in a conviction on your driving record.

3. Suspended license due to an outstanding red light camera ticket?
If you forget to answer your red light camera ticket within 30 days, your license will be suspended. If that’s not enough, your $277 ticket will go to collections where it will DOUBLE in price!

4. Have you lost your $158 Notice of Violation or $277 Uniform Traffic Citation?

Provide your vehicle’s tag number and they will give you the notice number and pin of your violation. With that information, you can log into violationinfo.com and view your video.

I have a legal question regarding the types of violation these tickets are. When you receive the notice of violation, this is not a ticket, and therefore not a moving violation. If the notice of violation becomes a uniform traffic citation, is this now made into a moving violation and then can cost points on your license?
Excellent question Alex! When you received a “Notice of Violation”, it’s like receiving a parking ticket. If paid, it doesn’t affect your driving record, it does’t carry points, and doesn’t increase your insurance. The reason one would consider fighting them is when there is a good chance of getting it dismissed so avoid having to pay it at all. Once it becomes a “Uniform Traffic Citation (UTC)” it IS a moving violation that if paid, does go on your driving record and can be used against you despite it no carrying points per the red light statute. So you should ALWAYS fight them once they are UTCs. Hope that helps!
I receive these stupid red light camera tickets every couple of months and it seem like it cost more to fight them than it does to just pay $150 to make them go away. I never look at the pictures carefully, but I looked at the last one after reading the comments on this website. The first picture clearly shows my vehicle coming to a full stop and the second picture clearly shows my vehicle making a right turn. Would it be more expensive to fight this ticket?

I received a NOV redlight ticket ,Wich was my second time, but sent money order along with required info via instructions. That was Dec 2019. Now end of July 2020 I receive a notice of suspension come Aug, 12.. I never received a UTC saying I didn’t pay or anything so of course I went straight to clerk of courts in Wich she gave me a copy of UTC along with the larger fine fee, a late fee, and a reinstatement fee if liscence become suspended. All in all $ 400 !!!! I know I mailed payment because it was so obvious it was the better easiest forced option that was offered. I kept copy of money order for quite some time but I threw it out after several months. Somehow it never made its destination thru mail or it was never credited when received. I am positive I have been reamed for a $ 158 twice already. . I can’t bare to simply accept these crooked unconstitutional demands as if the severe injustice at hand is an acceptable practice of law. The clerk accepts the fines but doesn’t have records as the issuer. Sends me to ask police Dept for assistance, or call the issuer for assistance but has to have all money up front to avoid suspension. PLEASE HELP WITH ADVICE OR DIRECTION ?? I WISH I COULD SUE

I live in Michigan and was in Clearwater, Florida about a month and a half ago for business. I was in rental car and received a notice from the rental car comonay charging me a $20 fee amd saying that I received a red light camera citation. I run a light red. The cop gave me a ticket for $266.00 Dollars. I check the Florida Statues, and the ticket was suppose to be only $158.00. I decided to go to court, to find out why. At court, I told judge Polak, that I did realize I got distracted and run the red light, and I even saw the video. The reason why I when to court was because, I check in the government web site, and the ticket was suppose to be $158.00 not $266.00. I even read to him the statues 316.074. He told me do not believe everything you find in the internet, and supposedly he review the law in his computer, and said was “$266.00”. After that, he gave me another infraction, that the sentence was $158.00 civil penalty +$106.00 court cost. Are Marion County Officers, overcharging, and the local government is aware of that??

Throughout Central Florida, there are different signs at different locations stating No Turn on Red. There is a sign on Maguire Blvd and Colonial Drive that states, No Turn on Red. The sign is next to the traffic light where it is visual. I have noticed numerous signs at the same location, however; Apopka, Florida that’s not the case. The No Turn on Red is on the far right side written in black and white. It is not even close to the traffic light. To my surprise, I received a ticket. No, I didn’t even see the sign to the far right. This is a legitimate concern , I would like assistance with this matter.

I received a citation for going on a red light. It was because I was in the wrong lane. It was green to go straight which I did, but red to turn left.
My mistake was being in the middle lane. The lane to go straight was the right line. There were 3 lines. Usually the middle lane is for going straight.

Paul, if the registered owner of the car was not the driver when the violation occurred, they can fill out an Affidavit of Non Liability and transfer the violation to the actual driver.

for $158 and my daughter was driving my car on the date of the notice…the notice says it was to be paid by 9/30/17, I called the traffic violation people and they said it’s now with Miami Dade courts and gave a citation number which Miami Dade says they have no record of on their system…so I’m not sure what to do at this point?

Hello. I was at a red light waiting to turn left. The 3 lanes to my right were green. I decided to not go left and just go straight one more block and so I decided to go into the right lane next to me and go forward, and yes the lane was green.
The camera shows me stopped at the red light -correct. And it shows me in a lane where that light was green.

I recently found out that my ex husband received a red light photo ticket in Florida where he lives last year. I have not lived in Florida in many years and was not there. He also did not get the notice of the red light ticket. I was getting an insurance quote and that is how I found out. I actually did not have a FL drivers license then as I have lived in 2 other states since then and have an active license in another state. I had thought that my ex took my name off of the truck as I signed it over to him, but apparently it was still on there. This ticket is over a year old and I am not sure how to fight it. This typically happens when the address on the license and registration are not up to date, so the person never receives the initial notice. If the addresses are correct, there is definitely room to contest this! Feel free to call or email me.
Got a traffic citation for $262 from a red light camera in Jacksonville. I never got the initial notice of violation for $158. I looked it up on photonotice and apparently the violation notice was sent to my old address on the 19th of January, I had moved on the 14th of January and had put a change of address in at the Post Office on the 17th of January. I would have had no problem with paying the 158 for the violation, but I do have an issue paying the 262 since I was never given the opportunity to pay the 158.
As long as you changed the address on your license (and registration) within the required 10 days, you can definitely contest this in court!
I was taking a left turn and my view of the light was obstructed by a large semi truck in front of me. So I could not see that the light had turned red right before I crossed the white line. Do I have a chance of fighting the camera ticket? I really didn’t know I was running a light but I would hate to waste time and pay extra fees if that isn’t going to be an acceptable argument. I would like to add that the photos on the ticket show my plate number and my vehicle from a distance. You can’t see into the vehicle, so they could not know who was driving. I read that you don’t have to give them a name for who was actually driving the car. Is that true?
Unfortunately, no. In Florida, as the registered owner of the vehicle you are 100% responsible for what happens in that car, including red light camera tickets. If the driver cannot be seen from the video or photos, you need to mail an Affidavit identifying who the person was driving the vehicle or you will be held responsible for the violation.
Valerie, this is a very common scenario. However, a judge may simply say “you need to have adequate space between the car in front of you,” so I wouldn’t risk fighting it in this case and just pay the initial Notice of Violation!

Hi! I was at the intersection of the US1 and 27th Ave in Miami, there are certain times of the day where there’s a green arrow to turn left on this intersection but most of the time there isn’t. It was 9.30 AM, so it was rush hour and the light was green. I stopped in the middle of the intersection hoping I could cross at some point but the cars never stopped coming so I couldn’t cross and then the light turn red and I was in the middle of the intersection so I had to cross and I saw a flash so i think i’m getting a ticket….do you know if there’s any way to fight it??

Laura, what you did may not necessarily result in a violation. I would wait and see if they issue one, just make sure to check your mail frequently and confirm that the address on your license and registration are up to date so the notice, if they do mail it, doesn’t get misplaced.

So i have a red light ticket in my grandmothers name due on Feb. 10th 2017. Hello, I think I may have been photographed at an intersection making a uturn while the traffic ight was red. Is it illegal to make a uturn while the light is red and no signs saying no uturn or no turns?
Alex, a red light should be treated a stop sign. You come to a complete stop until the light turns green. So yes, unless the light was green and you made the uturn, you could be charged with a ticket.

Hello! I’m 38. I just moved from KY to FL about 8 months ago. Honestly, I did not know about these cameras in FL. I also never got any tickets before. Make sure the address on your license and registration are up to date. You may not necessarily get a violation, but if you do, just pay the $158. The odds of getting this one dismissed are low and I don’t want you risking higher fees… and no, paying the $158 won’t affect your license or insurance since it isn’t a ticket yet.

I called an attorney Monica Benitez about a red light ticket, she advised me to let the time laps until after the due date for the 158.00, only then she could help me to avoid the points. Hi my name is Lynsay and I passed a red light on accident following a tall truck, I couldn’t see past the truck and I wasn’t too close behind it either but by the time it passed the line I saw the light was yellow and then turned red and it was too late for me to stop and I count stop fast because my SUV is extremely old with a delicate engine and I can’t break fast in it. I received a UTC for running a red light. the car is registered in the name of a Trust. My name is not on title. The UTC was issued to the trust.
I do not believe that red light cameras are just or constitutional. What would happen if I just ignore the UTC?

Now, that I fully examined the video and pictures, nowhere do I see a sign that says “red light camera on right on red.” The pictures clearly show brake lights, hence I was braking. The picture shows my MPH never changed in either picture that’s some faulty camera.

I received a $158 red light violation that is due on the 13th of this month. As of right now I am financially unable to pay the ticket on that exact date due to my current pay periods. (Because if Thanksgiving I will have to wait until the 18th to receive my first paycheck in three weeks as well as being 8 months pregnant and paying all the expenses that come with a newborn. From everything I can see online there are no ways to pay the fine in increments and if I do not pay it on the exact date my license will be suspended and the fine will double, is this true? High my name is Joseph and I’m 19. I just started so I haven’t got any tickets before. But the other day I was driving down the street and wasn’t paying attention and I saw I was approaching a red light. So I pressed on the brakes quick and I ended up passing the white line but was not in the middle of the intersection I believe half of my car if not all was passed the white line but I wasn’t in the middle of the road there were no cars crossing and I saw no cars behind me. So I put my car in reverse to back up my car to get behind the line but as soon as I started to reverse the line turned green before I could even get behind the line. Lime it happen so fast. I was stopped at a stop light today in a middle lane (straight only) in Ft Lauderdale. When the left turn signal turned green, I heard someone honk and started to move forward having caught sight of the green turn signal. It was only about a second after I started moving that I realized the solid green light had not illuminated and that I’d started moving on a red light. I received a red light ticket through certified mail, which my 11 year old signed for without me knowing. I noticed the address on it was wrong and the fine was for $264. I spoke with the officer who signed the ticket and explained that I never received the first notice, probably because the address was wrong in the first place. He said he would be willing to go to court with me and ask the judge to drop the fee to $158 since I never received the first notice. The problem is I can’t go to court because the car is in my ex’s name. He gave the car to me as a Christmas gift. I pay the insurance, which is in my name, but he pays the payments still. The court told me he had to be the one who went to court and in order to drop the fee, since the ticket is in his name. I mailed out a check for the $264 to avoid having any contact with my ex. He lives in CA and we no longer have any contact with each other due to him being abusive. I went to get the tags renewed and they informed me I couldn’t because his license has been suspended due to not paying that ticket. I did mail it out and now they are trying to tell me they never received it….”that it might of gotten lost in the mail”. I really need this car and I don’t want to have to contact my ex in order to have it legal to drive again. Is there anything I can do?

I just received a 277.00 dollar ticket for not making a complete stop before a right hand turn. It is clear from the picture that the opposite lanes crossing the intersection have the left turn arrows, so I turned right. Should I fight this?

My mom received a red light camera violation letter. It says the fine is $158, but she wasn’t the one driving the car. We were driving from the hospital to see my dad and I wasn’t paying attention at this particular light and though I could make it.
Either way I don’t deny the ticket at all since the pictures are very clear and the video tells all. My question is the sate of Florida gives me the option of transferring the liability of the ticket to my self since she wasn’t driving. I’m going to just pay the ticket anyway, but I’m not sure if I actually transfer the violation if it will become a UTC and go on my driving record and cost me more money.
What will the violation do to my mom’s driving record if I just leave it as it is and pay the fine without transferring liability?

Hello I found your website on google, and notice you have replied to people requests. Thanks for taking your time to help some of us out. I recently got a Notice of Violation and i’m doubt because to me I made a rolling red right turn in a “careful and prudent” manner. Even stopping for 1/10th of a second lol. (joke aside please look at video) I have looked at the video time and time and frame by frame and I think I should fight it.

I just received a 158$ red light notice of violation from the Dade county. This is my first violation notice I’ve ever received. It was very late at night when one of the cars in front of me just stopped in the middle of the intersection as if the driver didn’t know which way he/she should go, so I changed the lane and drove pass him as I’d noticed that the light turned yellow. The pictures clearly showed that the light turned red when I passed the intersection.
I’ve called a traffic attorney for a consultation and she gave me 2 options: either pay 158$ now or wait 30 days until it goes to the court then fight the case.
Are those the options I can do now? Should I wait til the case goes to the court? If I choose to do so, what could have happened next?

hi. I got 4 red light tickets within 6 months…. My concern is each one comes as a utc and never when the ticket is $158. How come they never sent it when it was $158??? Receive a letter that my license will suspended in 2 days. Not putting to much much to it. I received the utc about a week later for a red light. The pictures say my speed was 75. I’m not sure if I can fight it but I’m wondering why was the first violation sent out.

I just received a NOV from Miami Springs @ Le jeune and 36th st for “failure to comply with a red light signal”, I was making what I thought was a legal right turn on red. There were no signs that I can see, and I cannot view the video online for whatever reason. It says that I can ask for a hearing? Does that mean that I have to wait for a real traffic ticket and chance points to fight this BS?

My elderly father is the registered owner. He can prove that he was not the driver, but we have about eight (8) family members that it could have been. Since he is compeled, by law, to give name, address, and age, does he list all eight (8) possibilities? We cannot ascertain whom the driver was, but what we DO know is that it was NOT the registered owner. We guess it could either be my wife, or my mother (registered owners wife) whom lives in another state. What is our best course of action? Thanks!

I was going to pay the UTC but after reading many blogs and entries and speaking with others, I am considering fighting it. I was in the far left lane, getting ready to turn left and make a U-turn… and the light was yellow, but as I advance to the intersection, it turned red just as I was crossing the line…I could either back up or continue…so I continued so as not to cause an accident. I received a red light camera notice of violation from Florida City. My original intention was to pay and get it over with, but I decided to put it off a bit as I had other bills to pay. Today I remembered the notice and unfortunately I’m two days late. I went online and paid the $158, but now I’m pretty sure I’ll be issued a UTC. Do I have any recourse in fighting this and not getting any points on my license? Is paying the notice an admission of guilt?

The judge was an elderly retired senior judge who was appointed by the City to rubber stamp Red Light Tickets in a Kangaroo court that featured a lawyer, several Sheriff’s deputies and two technicians armed with videos and computers against me. I believe these tickets will be eventually thrown out on constitutional grounds but I wonder what I can do at this stage legally to avoid paying what amounts to a hidden tax in what is nothing more than a money making scheme for The City of Orlando, which is broke.

I posted this sometime ago on your web page and as yet have received no reply. I did receive an IM requesting the NOV and Pin # of my ticket, but nothing since. In the meantime I have received a notice that my license will be suspended May 6th for not paying the fine. As my license is a Class B CDL and my means of making a living, I need to fight this ASAP. Ben, if you mean the first “Notice of Violation,” then Florida law requires the notice to be mailed within 30 days after the violation has occurred. If payment of this notice has not been made, or you want to fight it, then the Uniform Traffic Citation (the actual traffic ticket) is mailed after 60 days of the Notice of Violation. I did not come to a complete stop before turning right at a red light. Does statute 316.0083 protect me from prosecution by photo enforcement? Is it worth fighting a $158 ticket? If so, what are your fees?
Sally, making a right turn on red is legal in Florida so long as it is made in a “careful and prudent manner at an intersection where right-hand turns are permissible.” So if there was no sign, I would fight it. Feel free to call me and I’ll take a closer look!
I received a no turn on red ticket recently; I did “clearly” run the red-light (watched the video), however, I was already going about 18mph and it was still yellow and turned red a little bit before I hit the line. There were no cars coming, there were no pedestrians or bicyclists in the video. Not sure if it’s worth it to even bother fighting this… May just be easier to pay the $158.

^ I looked up 316.0083 and under it it had the following phrase listed:
“c)1. A notice of violation and a traffic citation may not be issued for failure to stop at a red light if the driver is making a right-hand turn in a careful and prudent manner at an intersection where right-hand turns are permissible” What does that even mean? How do THEY define “careful and prudent?” For me, I was careful and prudent because nobody was coming or at risk and I didn’t want to just slam on my breaks right then and there.

I received a Red light ticket in the mail while visiting my family in florida. I paid it because I dont live in FL and didnt want to have to schedule a hearing which would be more expenseive to buy a plane ticket just for this. However, I made a Legal right turn during a red light, their argument was that I did not completely stop.again I dont live in Florida so I paid it, and being in another state i did not want anything against my license. I got a ticket notice for $260.00 and it said I got one before this notice however I never got a first violation notes for the $158.00 to start with. I was not driving the vehicle at the time this ticket says. I do not use this vehicle and had only driven it 2 times in five years and I have not driven it at all year (2013) I think this is noting but an arm of taxation with no real legal recourse. It is ether pay this amount or pay twice as much if you want to exercise your right be heard in court. I also saw where rear end collision go up by as much as 30% where these tax cameras are put up.
